The Bunker Video

Hendon Beach shoot

This is me (Booga), Dave Irwin, who I was in I Breathe First with (along with Marty Yule), Tommy Hair and his younger brother. On the edge of frame is Ange, who worked for Community Arts Project Sunderland. We are filming a scene from the Bunker video on Hendon Beach, sometime in 1982. I am playing the part of Rock Benson, unemployed rock star. Dave (or 'Cess' as he was alternatively known - after former Sunderland player Cecil Irwin) is playing Rick Zimmerman, roving reporter. It took loads of takes because of the wind and I got to drink loads of Newcastle brown. Mick Catmull, who also worked for CAPS and directed the video, would also have been there. Both Mick and Tommy now work in the TV and Film sector. Ange is awol. I think this was taken by Micky Stewart. It later appeared in an edition of The Face, which was at the time an ultra trendy style magazine, which I hated.

On the horizon you can see an example of a 'ship', long floating metal things that people used to make on the River Wear. This futile and outdated occupation was stopped by the government of the day in order to make way for the much more economically viable 'service industries', whereby the sons and daughters of the makers of the 'ships' get to sell coperate McDeath burgers and Cappacinno's to other service industry workers who are on their dinner hour.
