Ramones – Hammersmith Palais

The Ramones one & opnly gig in Britain and your Scab Dips Metropolitan correspondent gets gets in for nowt on DeeDee’s guest list. But enough about me being a Jammy Bastard, you want to hear about the gig, don’t cha? The Palais stowed out with multi coloured Punx of all shapes and sizes with things like 2TAKE IT DEEDEE” and “1-2-3-48” written on their backs. Two support bands played – 1st Siam, who were shit and only got cheered cos they had a girl singing. All tits and teeth and no talent. 2nd band were Telephone, they were French and the audience seemed a bit wary at first, but after a few songs they showed a lot of energy and by the end of their spot had the audience eating out of their hands. They had a cute French nymph on Bass, & I’d definitely see them again. It took another ¾ of an hour before The Ramones came on. The 4 yankee bastards surfaced and the atmosphere built into near hysteria. Marky’s drums smashed into ‘Rock & Rall Radio’. This was followed by a string of songs which included ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’, ‘Labotomy’, ‘Rock & Roll High School’ and a fair few from their new album. Theres no point in me trying to give you any idea of the order of the songs cos I couldn’t even remember which songs they had or hadn’t done 5 mins after the gig. Their 2 hour set was a constant assault on the senses. It was like a battle between the crowd and The Ramones to see who could move fastes and make the most noise. The audience never stood a chance and accepted defeat as the Ramones spoke between every 6 sings other than the customary “1-2-3-4” (or should I say wan to tree faw). The best song of the night was ‘Today your love, tomorrow the world’, which had every single person (yes, I looked at every one of them) pogoing like mad.
The Ramones really are larger than life in one blurb of words, lacking pause or punctuation (like my typing eh?) Joey shouted “Hey, we’re da Ramooones, its great to be back here in London England….Take it DeeDee…1234”. From the front to the back of the hall there was no space. It was like the celebrations in the Roker End when Sunderland score (if you can remember!) the only difference was that the celebrations lasted two hours! Definitely worth a mention are the Beach Boys oldie ‘California Sun’, ‘Rockaway Beach’ which was far faster than on the Live LP and ‘Beat on the Brat’ during which Joey waved an inflatable baseball bat around. They did 2 encores which they repeated some of the songs that they had done earlier. Judging by the new songs the fab four did their new album it sounds like a definite return to the filth and fury of their earlier stuff. By the end of the night DeeDee had gone through two bass guitars, the crowd had gone through one of the monitors, Marky had used only one set of drum stix (but probably 5 sets of arms judging by the speed he was drumming) and on the whole the audience went home knackered, soaking with sweat and deliriously happy.
