S.L.F.

Stiff Little Fingers have always been one of the more accessable punk bands. Ave reporter Booga Benson and his business associate “Craig ? found themselves at a recent S.L.F. sound check and this is what they came out with, not much, but what do you expect for 20p.

Why are you moving away from the punk scene and what pissed you off about it?
Jake: its basically through bands like the Exploited etc. setting up barriers by singing violent lyrics where as at the start of the punk scene it was all about breaking down these barriers.
Dolphin: Yeah, all these new punk bands have pre-concived ideas and will go no further while they’re telling people to go out and “Fuck a mod”.
Why did the drummer leave?
Jake: well basically he wanted to do 1234 punk thrash which we didn’t, it’s pointless playing the same set for 3 1/2 years.
Why has it taken so long to reach Sunderland?
Jake: because of a totally unesessary ban imposed upon us after a rock against racism gig. We were accused of being Racist!
Why leave Rough Trade? And why sign up with Chrysalis
Jake: we never really intended staying with Rough Trade, but really it was a lack of support and publicity, their attitude was sort of “well done lads….next”. They wanted us to stay big and them to stay small, which is f*cking impossible. They even published a 30 date tour on a ¼ page ad, you could hardly read the f*cker. We had loads of offers from record companies but Chrysalis offered us complete control over everything we do. They cant even print a badge without asking us first.
How did you get involved with that play on BBC 1, and are you considering doing any more…ere…acting?
Jake: definitely not! I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life, never again. Next!
What do you think of the other Irish Bands? U2, The Outcasts etc
Jake: U2 are the best band in the world, but The Oucasts are f*cking terrible.

(he didn’t mention the undertones but he did have a badge with Feargals face splattered all over it).

At this stage in the interview we were ‘removed’ by a bunch of Homo-Semi-
erectus (bouncers) thus with an exchange of handshakes the interview finished.
