Sunderland musicians collective was formed September 81 (It was actually 80 – booga) and soon obtained a large wharehouse above a garage for rehearsals on Borough Road. This was well advertised via Ann Dumble and Tyne Tees T.V. it was well used by bands who joined S.M.C. Unfortunately we lost Borough Road. After a good deal of work by youth worker Andy we were offered the use of the upper floor of Green Terrace Primary School. (since then we have separate management to run the hall, offices and the six classrooms). S.M.C. rents out the rooms to several other youth groups. S.M.C. now have 2 rehearsal rooms, our own office and the use of the hall for gigs.
Sunderland Youth CND has one office, meeting place and, so they say, somewhere to make their own bomb which they claim will put a stop to nuclear armaments once & for all! Beware too of the Ford weightlifters. They’re using a room to lift funny balloons on sticks. If whilst mootching about the place you come across Cinderella or any knights in shining armour, its not the new futurist look, it’s springboard Drama Club who also have a room.
We are also in the throws of building our own print workshop where bands and other weirdos can print their own posters, badges, tickets and T-Shirts.
The lease for G.T is not permenant, the only way we can make sure it will be is with your support, it is your alternative youth centre and is for you and your ideas. By adhering to the fire regulations you can be sure there’ll be plenty of gigs at G.T . We are trying to get some big bands up AND you wont have to be signed in by a student. To get the place working we also need financial support (MONEY!) also wood, paint, tools, typewriters, desks and elbow grease. If you think you can help with any of these please contact Jo, ** Park Place West, Sunderland… quickly.
If you are in a band and (gulp!) aren’t in the S.M.C. why don’t you contact us at G.T and join? It’s £5 per annum, and to use the rehearsal rooms it’s only 50p per hour – and theres always gigs. So shift ya butts, dig deep and do the best thing you can do – join!
